As told by his mother...

   “David is a phenomenon! When he was born, the doctor told us they thought he was a “Mongoloid Idiot” and if we didn’t want to take him home, we didn’t have to see him. How ridiculous! He was our son and we would not consider abandoning him.
   David began experiencing unusual weight gain in elementary school – not uncommon for kids with Down Syndrome. He was never taller than the tenth or fifteenth percentile, but his weight was well over the ninetieth percentile. By the time he graduated from high school at age 21, he was five feet tall but weighed over 230 pounds! David would eat anything that didn’t crawl off the plate and never seemed to be ‘too full’. Working at a grocery store where everyone loved him and wanted to make him happy didn’t help: the deli ladies were more than happy to indulge him with fried chicken for every break.
   Folks with Down Syndrome tend to have poor muscle tone and very slow metabolism. Small wonder David gained weight so easily. But the heart is a muscle, and his excess weight was creating a huge risk of cardiac disease and premature death. We needed a miracle. We found it in Kurt Weinreich.
   When David began working with Kurt twice a week, he could not run, had poor breath control and the mind-set of a helpless victim. That was more than a year ago. With the help of a healthy diet and the encouragement of his friends and family, David has lost over 50 pounds! He prefers to walk than be driven (home is 2 miles from the gym, but he walks it rain or shine, snow or heat wave). David outpaced many of the adults on a recent hike in Estes Park and didn’t ever stop talking to the guide. Despite being physically assaulted by a stranger several months ago, David has lost his ‘victim’ attitude, in no small thanks to Kurt’s working on some kick boxing moves that make David feel powerful and in control.
   David is still sweet and caring, but he knows he is a strong man these days. He will also tell you he is handsome and looks great. He is proud of his new wardrobe (he has gone from a size 44 waist to a 34 or 36 and now wears a normal shoe instead of an extra wide) and is walking tall – even for a five foot phenomenon! On New Years Day this year, after only a few hours of sleep, David was up and dressed by 7:30 for his usual Sunday morning workout with Kurt. Forget sleep – he had a mission: getting and staying in shape.

   Slow and steady wins the race… A little over four years ago I decided it was time to get off the proverbial couch and get in shape as I was not getting any younger. My energy was flagging, and those darn pounds kept sneaking onto my frame, and I was close to needing to go up ANOTHER size in clothing. Enter Prestige Fitness and Kurt Weinreich.
   Anyone who has joined Prestige knows that part of signing up is getting an orientation with a personal trainer. Since it had been so long since I’d seen the inside of any weight room I figured, “Why not? – I’ll just use a trainer for a month or two.” I was blessed to be signed up with Kurt. I say blessed because his style was so nonthreatening and unlike what I had expected.
That couple of months turned into years. I’ve lost 25 pounds, 3 sizes in clothing and feel better than I did 20 years ago. Kurt established the need and desire for staying healthy and in shape.
   There were plenty of bumps along the way, tendinitis, shoulder issues and even some minor injuries outside the gym, but Kurt always worked around whatever was going on. When I had physical therapy, he was great at working with the corrective recommendations.
   As I approach 63, I am stronger, feeling better, and have a better outlook on life because of the investment made in training. It didn’t happen overnight, but the slow and steady progress is here to stay. The foundation has been laid, thanks to Kurt, that will keep me motivated, healthy and in great physical condition.

   "This year will be the second year I have attempted the Bolder Boulder; the infamous 10K held each Memorial Day in Boulder, CO. Last year was my first year and coming off of surgery 3 months prior to the race, I did not do as well as I had hoped or expected.
   My husband had always told me that weight training would make me a better runner, but I always associated weight training with freakishly large muscle heads. My husband and I moved to the area and joined Prestige Fitness. We also received some personal training sessions with Kurt, and my first session was scheduled for a few days later.
   Kurt is an excellent trainer; he'll push you further than your mind will tell you that you can go, but also stop you so that you can walk and get dressed the next morning! Kurt was great about showing me the machines and also about doing the exercises various ways to avoid boredom. I was happy to see results only after 4 weeks; meeting with Kurt 2-3 times a week. I'm also happy to say my running has improved and I feel much stronger because of the weight training I have learned from Kurt. Yes, you can say my husband was right!

   "After watching the progress my mother, a two-time breast cancer survivor, was making from her training sessions with Kurt, I decided I wanted to jump-start my own workout regimen. I signed up with Kurt 18 months ago in an effort to lose some weight and tone muscle.
